"You ought to know God through some chruch." -Richard Wright
"This was the culture from which i sprang. This was the culture from which i fled." -Richard Wright
"Having been thrust out of the world because of my race, I had accepted my destiny by not being curious about what shaped it." - Richard Wright
"I would send other words to tell, to march, to fight, to create a sense of the hunger of life that gnaws in us all, to keep alive in our hearts a sense of the inexpressibly human." -Richard Wright
Critics' Reviews:
"Black Boy is powerful, moving, and horrifying. It is certain to be extravagantly praised and roundly condemned. It will be widely read." --Orville Prescott, New York Times, February 28,1945)
"Richard Wright uses vicious and straightforward English; often there is real beauty in his words even when they are mingled with sadism." --W. E. B. Du Bois, New York Herald Tribune, March 4,1945
"Richard Wright's autobiography, Black Boy may very possibly go down as one of the most memorable books of our time, a kind of twentieth-century Uncle Tom's Cabin. Though it may not cause the immediate sensation stirred up by the author's lurid bestseller, Naive Son, it is in our judgement much the better book, more potent, more dramatic if less theatrical, more accurate in its aim, more telling in impact. Indeed it is the raw material out of which that unforgettable novel was forged." --Charles Lee, Philadelphia Record, March 1,1945
Quote 1: The first quote I chose is very improtant in this book. Richard moves around his whole life and he lives with his grandparents a lot. His grandmother is a very religious woman and tells him that he will burn in hell if he does not find God. She worries for him and eventually gives up on trying to make him believe in God. (Wright doesn't know if he believes there's a god)
Quote 2: This quote talks about how Wright learned from living down in the south. He learned how to defend himself, got educated, and many other things. Wright also had to learn to not act higher than white people down south. This was really hard for him since he didn't agree with the matter. This made him want to go up north. This quote is a mjor change in the story because then he has plans.
Quote 3: Wright was black. This made people automatically judge him. He couldn't get well paying jobs and he couldn't get a job for very long because of how he acted. Wright finally accepted the fact that he couldn't act like a white person and started acting differently or he at least tried to. Wright could never get used to the idea of not being able to get any smarter. He loved to learn new things.
Quote 4: This last quote I chose tells you to stay true to yourself and if you set your mind to it you can achieve what seems to be impossible. It also tells you to never give up on your dreams. Wright wanted to become a writer and everyone always laughed at him and told him it wsa stupid and to not think about it. Wright didn't give up and now look at what he has achieved.
Video 1: I chose the first video beacuse the book took place when time in history was taking place. Blacks were treated differently and given not as nice things to use. Some examples of this are in the video i used, such as restrooms, water fountains, and stores.
Video 2: The second video i chose was because the KKK were really popular around this time era. The KKK killed people that RIchar Wright knew. Other just plain white people that wer not in the KKK also killed people Wright knew such as his uncle.
